Understanding Your Diamond: A Buyer's Verification Guide

Purchasing a natural diamond is a significant investment. This guide explains how Izakov Fine Jewelry verifies the authenticity and quality of every certified diamond we sell, and how you can independently confirm those details yourself.

Independent Grading Reports

For natural diamonds weighing 1.00 carat or more, Izakov requires an independent grading report issued by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). GIA is a non-profit, impartial institution widely recognized as the global authority on diamond grading. Its reports assess the four Cs:cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, using standardized scientific methods. Appraisers and insurers rely on GIA grading reports as the definitive reference when valuing a stone.

A grading report is not an appraisal of monetary value; it is an objective scientific evaluation of the diamond's characteristics. Keeping your report is important: insurers and future appraisers will use it to confirm what you own.

Laser Inscriptions: Linking Stone to Report

GIA inscribes each certified diamond's unique report number on the girdle (the narrow edge around the diamond's widest point) using a precise laser. This microscopic inscription is invisible to the naked eye but readable under magnification.

Before every diamond leaves Izakov, we verify that the laser inscription on the girdle matches the report number on the accompanying GIA grading report. This step confirms that the stone in your setting is the exact stone that was graded, not a substitute.

How to Verify Your Diamond After Purchase

You receive two ways to verify your diamond independently:

  • Physical grading report — Your GIA report is included with your purchase. Store it securely with your other important documents.
  • Online report verification — Enter your report number at GIA Report Check (gia.edu/report-check) to confirm the report is authentic and view the graded characteristics on file.

If you ever have the diamond re-set or serviced by a third-party jeweler, ask them to verify the girdle inscription matches your report number before and after any work is performed.

Traceability and Responsible Sourcing

The laser-inscribed girdle number is also the foundation of Izakov's traceability program. As described on our Responsible Diamond Sourcing page, this unique number can be used to trace the diamond's origin from rough stone through polishing, information not captured on a grading report. All diamonds we sell are conflict-free and comply with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.
